Topeka, Ks - Day 28

Hi everyone from Topeka, Ks – Day 28
Happy 4th of July to all!!! Our first stop was in Katy Park this morning and thought this was appropriate for the holiday!!

We started riding at 6:30 after breakfast at the hotel and were pleasantly surprised with a cloud cover and some still wet roads from the storm last night. I saw many of these windmills out in the middle of fields – nothing else around and suspect they were used to pump water from the ground at one time.
After leaving Abilene, we were on back country roads – being a holiday and Sat., we had the roads to ourselves. That really gives you lots of time to enjoy nature and the beauty of your surroundings – we could hear or see the Sag wagons coming while they were fairly far away. I really was just smiling most of the day. We did have many “Caution” warnings about railroad tracks coming and one in particular even said “BAD RAILROAD TRACKS”!! As you might have guessed, I did walk over them.

Today reminded me of the song –“Talk to the Animals” because I did a lot of it!!! At one point I stopped to get a drink and snack and wasn’t really paying attention when I started to hear some stirring in the field beside me – I looked over and there stood this herd of cattle all looking at me – ears perked and everything – I chatted with them for quite a while, but then sadly had to move on. There were many other herds that I spoke with too, but none were as picturesque or attentive as this group!!!

I found the naming of the roads interesting again today – see sign announcing “G Ave.” – look at picture beside it – this was actually G Ave. – doesn’t look anything like what I would expect an avenue to look like. The road went on for 10 miles before becoming route 4.

Our first SAG was at mile 35 at Katy Park in a little town called White City – they actually had brick streets and in the middle of town was a sign board right in the middle of the street announcing the events for the holiday – when we were there, it was still community breakfast time.
This picture is from right across the street from the park – it really reminded me of a “dead old western” town.

Some interesting "yard art"!!

The play land at our hotel tonight!!

Today's hurrah goes out to all of our men who fought and gave their lives so that we might have the freedoms that we now enjoy and allowed our country to become independent!!

Thank God for the safety, health, and energy!!

  1. Happy 4th to you.
We spent another day at Caledonia..kinda crowded, but not bad. Some small problem with our location (David and Corwyn are camping there, and it was their job to save a spot that was flat, sunny, and had a grill. )Well, it had a grill, was flat, but Megan was not pleased with amount of trees blocking the sun..but she prepared the meal anyway, and it was very good!
One concern, the arrentive picture of the listening cattle....U have seen the movie 'Babe'??
Pls. give advance warning if you are going to appear on TV!
Keep on moving, and enjoy each day!

  2. Happy 4th of July (belated) to you too! I worked in the ER, Courtney at Ruby Tues. and Perry and Matt went to Ollie's (Perry loves that store - good stuff cheap!). Some of the local fireworks bothered the dogs. Rocky was panting for the longest time (he's never done that). Hope you got to see some fireworks, or at the very least - hope you went down the slide in the pool at the hotel!
