Montrose, Co - Day 17

Hi from Montrose, Co,
It was another early and beautiful morning – the first picture is taken right outside my hotel door – and the second is another picture of us loading our luggage.

We were treated today by being able to ride about 12 miles on a paved bike path along the Colorado River. The route was mapped out for us by a former ABB rider and it kept us off of the main road.

The river appears to be red and thus the name “Colorado”. It was very peaceful and calm – the weather was warm and we didn’t even wear jackets.

Shortly after leaving the path, we were joined with about 2000 other cyclists who are doing a 7 day “Ride the Rockies Tour”. We were asked to wear our ABB jerseys so it would be easier for the staff to pick us out on the road.

How would you like to live in this house?

We had a sizeable climb right after the rest stop and then a fast decent – we were on Rt 50 and apparently that is the only ride to Montrose where we are tonight. The other cyclists are camping and we are quite content in our comfortable hotel.
The day became quite warm – 92-94 and it was difficult for me to stay hydrated – I did try and did fairly well considering the amount of climbing (2487 ft) that we did. The van did a great job of stopping and getting water to us – even cold water – some of the other cyclists said they were being given warm water to drink – made me appreciate our staff even more.

This is a picture from the top of one of the hills that we climbed – look off in the distance and see if you can get the perspective of how much we climbed.

The worst part of the day was the last 10 miles – we had such strong headwinds that I couldn’t go above 6mph – and had my water bottles filled twice in 10 miles.
It was great to get in and get a shower and get the clothes washed for tomorrow – we ride one more day with the “Ride the Rockies” group and then our paths part.

Yes, David, I am checking the tires and yes, it was two different pieces of wire!!! But, thanks for asking!

Today's hurrah goes to Eleanor Pella, the nutritionist that I worked with two years ago. She helped me to eat more protein and get more energy from the food I did eat.

Thank God for the safety, health, and energy!

  1. Carol,
Why does the river appear red? I didn't look at the map route, but am curious how close you came (come) to Colorado Springs, the Olympic training center? Keep up the good work!
